Longhorn Council Summer Recruitment Series: Week 7
With your fall recruitment dates now firmly set, it is time to make sure you have the right number of enthusiastic adults ready to deliver a warm, organized experience on those specific days.
Welcome to Week 7 of our 2026 Longhorn Council Summer Recruitment Planning Series. This week centers on identifying gaps and inviting the additional volunteers and leaders your unit needs for the events you have already scheduled.
What to Do This Week (July 13–July 19)
1. Compare Your Current Volunteer Roster to Your Event Calendar
Review each of your confirmed recruitment events and identify exactly which volunteer roles are needed. Think about greeters, activity leaders, registration helpers, follow-up callers, and other key positions that will create a welcoming experience for new families.
2. Make Clear, Personal Requests for Specific Roles
Reach out through one-on-one conversations or simple talent surveys to invite parents and supporters into clearly defined roles. Let them know exactly what is needed, when they are needed, and how they can make a difference.
3. Begin Onboarding New Volunteers Right Away
Provide role descriptions, training opportunities, and the Youth Protection Training link so new volunteers feel confident, supported, and ready to help before your recruitment events arrive.
Tips for Success
- Tie every volunteer request to a specific date and event. "We need three greeters for our September 12 Join Night" is much easier to say yes to than a general request for help.
- Start with small, time-limited opportunities. Many parents are willing to help at a single event before committing to a larger leadership role.
- Publicly recognize and thank your current volunteers. Visible appreciation encourages others to become involved.
- Make Youth Protection Training easy to complete by providing direct links and offering assistance to new volunteers as they get started.
By the End of July 19, You Should Have:
✅ Volunteer roles assigned for each confirmed recruitment event
✅ New parents and supporters invited into specific volunteer opportunities
✅ New volunteers beginning onboarding and Youth Protection Training
✅ A stronger volunteer team prepared to support your fall recruitment efforts
Successful recruitment events depend on enthusiastic volunteers who help create a welcoming experience for every family. Investing time now to recruit, equip, and encourage your volunteer team will pay dividends throughout the fall and strengthen your unit for the entire Scouting year.
Stay tuned for Week 8 (July 20–26): Preparing and Training Your Team for Recruitment Success.
Happy Scouting!
Building stronger units together in Longhorn Council.
