We understand that many members of the Scouting community have questions about Worth Ranch and the impact of the Ross Fire. Below are the current answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
When can I visit Worth Ranch?
Answer: We know many members of the Scouting family are eager to visit Worth Ranch and see the property for themselves. At this time, however, the property is closed to all visitors. Worth Ranch remains within an active wildfire response area, and access is restricted for safety reasons.
Our first priority is the safety of firefighters, emergency personnel, our staff, and the public. We ask everyone to respect these restrictions and avoid traveling to the property.
Once the Ross Fire has been declared contained and it is safe to do so, we will begin exploring and coordinating opportunities for supporters, alumni, volunteers, and others to visit the property. Visitation plans will be communicated through our official website and social media channels.
What is the timeline for recovery and rebuilding?
Answer: Recovery planning is already underway, but it is too early to provide a definitive timeline. Our team is working with partners, experts, and local authorities who will assess the damage and develop both short-term and long-term plans
What happened to Worth Ranch's historical artifacts and memorabilia?
Answer: We know many members of our Scouting family are concerned about the historical items that were housed at Worth Ranch. Our team will work to assess what was impacted, what may have been preserved, and what recovery opportunities may exist. We will share more information once assessments have been completed.
Will historic structures be rebuilt or restored?
Answer: We know this is an important question for many people who have deep connections to Worth Ranch. At this time, it is too early to determine what restoration or rebuilding efforts may be feasible. Our immediate focus is understanding the extent of the damage and preserving opportunities for future decision-making. Historical significance will be an important consideration as recovery plans are developed.
What about program supplies, equipment, and camp resources?
Answer: The fire impacted a variety of facilities, equipment, and program resources. We will conduct a detailed inventory and damage assessment to better understand what was affected and what can be recovered or replaced.
Is Worth Ranch insured?
Answer: Yes. We have begun working with our insurance providers as part of the recovery process. Insurance will play an important role in evaluating covered losses, but it is too early to determine the full scope of coverages and recovery timelines.
Will Scouting programs be held at Worth Ranch again?
Answer: Our commitment remains to provide outstanding Scouting experiences. Our goal is to continue delivering quality outdoor programs and camping opportunities while long-term plans are developed. Will summer camp be held at Worth Ranch next year?
Answer: We know this is one of the most frequently asked questions. At this time, no decisions have been made. Our team is evaluating options and will communicate plans as soon as sufficient information is available.
How can I support the recovery effort?
Answer: The outpouring of support from Scouts, alumni, volunteers, businesses, and community members has been extraordinary. The most helpful ways to support recovery efforts include making a financial contribution, sharing official updates, and continuing to keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers. Specific opportunities to assist will be communicated as needs are identified.
Are volunteers being allowed to help with cleanup?
Answer: Not at this time. Worth Ranch remains within an active wildfire response area, and access to the property is restricted for safety reasons. Once conditions allow, Longhorn Council will evaluate opportunities for organized volunteer cleanup efforts.
In the meantime, volunteers can support Scouting through participating in council events and fundraising initiatives. Opportunities will be shared through the Longhorn Council website and social media channels.
Can I donate supplies or equipment?
Answer: We are incredibly grateful for the many offers of support. At this stage, we are focused on assessing the extent of the damage and identifying specific recovery needs. While certain donations may eventually be helpful, financial contributions currently provide the greatest flexibility as we navigate immediate needs and long-term recovery planning. Any requests for supplies or equipment will be communicated through our official channels.
I have supplies, expertise, equipment, volunteer assistance, or other resources to offer?
Answer: Please complete the Offers of Help form at the bottom of this page (Coming Soon). We welcome information about skills, professional expertise, connections, equipment, supplies, services, and other resources that may be helpful as we continue to assess needs and plan for the future.
How can businesses or organizations support the recovery effort?
Answer: The support of the broader community has already been extraordinary. Businesses, foundations, civic organizations, and community groups interested in supporting recovery efforts are encouraged to contact Longhorn Council directly. Financial contributions, expertise, and strategic partnerships may all play important roles in the recovery process.
Where can I find official updates?
Answer: The official source for Ross Fire and Worth Ranch updates is the Longhorn Council Ross Fire update webpage. Major updates may also be shared through Longhorn Council social media channels and email communications. We encourage everyone to rely on these official sources and avoid speculation as assessments and planning continue.
How can alumni share memories, photos, or historical information about Worth Ranch?
Answer: We encourage alumni and friends of Worth Ranch to preserve and share their photos, stories, and memories on “Worth Ranch- The Big Adventure” Facebook Group.
What can youth members do to help?
Answer: The best thing Scouts can do right now is continue living the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouts can help by staying informed through official updates, writing notes of encouragement, and sharing positive memories of Worth Ranch.
My Scout is upset about what happened at Worth Ranch. How can I help them?
Answer: It is normal for Scouts (and adults) to experience sadness, disappointment, or concern after seeing images or hearing news about a place that is meaningful to them. Parents and leaders can help by listening, encouraging Scouts to share their feelings and memories, and reassure them that many people are working together to understand the situation and determine the best path forward. Focusing on positive memories, friendships, and Scouting experiences can also be helpful.
How can Scouting leaders support youth members during this time?
Answer: Scouting leaders can provide a safe space for Scouts to ask questions, share memories, and talk about what Worth Ranch means to them. Leaders should encourage Scouts to rely on official updates, celebrate the experiences and lessons learned at camp, and continue living the Scout Oath and Scout Law through service, kindness, and support for one another.
What should I say if my Scout asks what will happen to Worth Ranch?
Answer: At this time, Longhorn Council is continuing to assess the impact of the Ross Fire and evaluate next steps. Remind them that the friendships, memories, traditions, and values developed through Scouting remain strong and continue to bring the Scouting community together.
Can Scouts send messages of encouragement?
Answer: Many firefighters, emergency responders, and support personnel have worked tirelessly throughout the Ross Fire response. Why aren't you making decisions faster?
Answer: We understand the desire for immediate answers, and we share the sense of urgency felt by so many in the Scouting community. However, responsible decisions require accurate information. Our team is working diligently to assess the property, understand available resources and constraints, and gather expert input before making long-term decisions. While we may not have all the answers today, we are committed to keeping our Scouting family informed as plans develop.
