Congratulations, Wendy Shaw: 1-Year Longhorn Council Anniversary

1 November 2021

Today the Longhorn Council (LHC) of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), spanning 23 counties in Texas, celebrates CEO Wendy Shaw’s anniversary as leader of the 100-plus-year-old organization that hosts adventures for families. She began her tenure on Nov. 1, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 250 similar councils of the BSA, only seven are led by women; Shaw heads the LHC with the largest budget and membership of the seven.

Since her appointment, she has strengthened the Longhorn Council’s workforce, supported protocols for Scouting according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, launched a new strategic planning initiative and led the council to exceed its annual giving fundraising goal for the first time since 2005. Under her leadership the LHC has also developed a task force to evaluate, strengthen and further modernize its popular camps and outdoor programs and has hosted an Inaugural Female Eagle Scout Celebration.

Shaw has spent her career with the BSA, leading Scouts at the local level as a manager, executive and director in Illinois, Kansas and Texas. From 2014 to 2018, she served as CEO for the Coronado Area Council in Kansas. Shaw and her family moved to North Texas in 2018, where Shaw served the Boy Scouts of America as the national director of Membership Growth. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from St. Olaf College and master’s degree in public administration from Montana State University.

In her time with the BSA and its councils, Shaw has been recognized as an experienced leader who excels in fiscal accountability, volunteer engagement and community partnership. She is a longtime member of Rotary and current member of the Rotary Club of Fort Worth.

“While I can hardly believe a year has passed since I joined the Longhorn Council, I am just as excited about the path ahead for our Scouts and their families,” Shaw says. “Our organization builds character in the youth who join us, helping them to become leaders and responsible citizens. What we do matters, and the safe and healthy environment we provide with parents is something we take pride in as an organization. It is my joy to spread the word about the benefits of Scouting, and highlight our wonderful Scouts, because I believe so strongly in the youth of today and their potential.”
