Scouting Heroism by 16-year-old Life Scout

Congratulations Leah Jo!

This 16-year old Life Scout from Troop 114G in the Denver Area Council was featured in Bryan on Scouting this week in the Unsung Heroes blog series.  She received the Medal of Merit in a virtual ceremony on April 20, 2020.  Her Scouting preparedness is described nicely in the article.

On Jan. 2, 2020, Leah Jo Maloney and her family were on a guided hike to the top of Mount Liamuiga, a volcano in the Caribbean country of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Though this hike wasn’t part of a BSA adventure, the trail offered the kind of challenging terrain that well-prepared Scouts crave. The 3.47-mile path promised a steep, muddy ascent through the jungle.

“It was clear the guides were not prepared to handle the situation,” Leah Jo says. “Fortunately, I had my first-aid kit and duct tape, and with the help of one of the other members of our party who was a doctor, we were able to stabilize the injury so she could be carried safely down the mountain.”

I love the part in the article that mentions that the “guides were not prepared to handle the situation.”  (Remember, this was not a BSA hike). Thank goodness she obviously was prepared!

I’d like to point out a nice Longhorn Council connection to this Life Scout.  Our new Director of Field Service, Scot Fuller, was a member of Leah Jo’s council in Denver so he had a part in her journey.  It’s always nice to find a connection and in Scouting, it seems that we are more connected than we realize.
