“Houston is proud of the fact that he’s a lifelong Scout. He’s been a continuously registered member of the Scouts since 1941. He served as past national president, executive board member and chaplain for the Association of Baptists for Scouting. He was chaplain for numerous events, including 12 national jamborees and two world jamborees, one of which was in Sweden that he took his son to. (It rained 11 out of 12 days, but they met the king of Sweden.)

Sam Houston achieved 80 years in Scouting on March 12, 2021
Longhorn Council Scouter Sam Houston celebrated his 80th year in Scouting on his 89th birthday, March 12, 2021. The in-person celebration that LHC Heart O’ Texas District has planned will be bitter-sweet since Mr. Houston passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
Funeral services were announced on the Heart O’ Texas District Facebook page and shared on our Longhorn Council Facebook page. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. It is very kind of his family to share some Scouting achievements and mementos with us.
Heart O’ Texas District Executive, Kevin Lane and District Leader, David Skelton, provided an in-depth look into Sam Houston’s Scouting history. They also invite the local community to help commemorate his 80-year achievement. Please see their press release below.
The annual Hillsboro Friends of Scouting Dinner will be 6 to 7:30pm, Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Scout Hut in Hillsboro located at 915 Corsicana Highway. Sam Houston joined Cub Scouts in the late 1930’s. He has been involved in Scouting ever since. He became a Scout Master in 1958. Since that time, he has held almost every position in Scouting from Council President three times and Council Commissioner for thirteen years. He is a distinguished Eagle Scout and has served on the Board of Directors of the National Eagle Scout Association and was a proud Order of the Arrow member.
Sam moved to Hill County in 1981 leading HILCO Electric Co-op until his retirement in 1995. He is a Baptist minister and has pastored rural churches for forty years, the last thirty-four at Woodrow Baptist Church. As a minister, he has served as Chaplain for the Boy Scout Council for fifty years including being the National Baptist Chaplain for Scouting and President of the National Baptist Association for Scouting. In 2018, he was recognized at the National Annual Meeting as the eleventh recipient of the National Duty to God Award. Laura Bush and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates were in attendance. Sam has served at eleven National Boy Scout Jamborees and two World Scout Jamborees.
