Prevention of Unacceptable Use of Longhorn Council Camp
June 27, 2020
Dear Longhorn Council Scouting Family,
I need to let you know of a situation involving Longhorn Council facilities. A non-Scouting organization attempted to rent Sid Richardson Scout Ranch for the purposes of a “youth camp.” We learned this afternoon that the camp would involve Confederate themes. The group’s reservation, which had not been finalized, has been cancelled. The group has not been and will not be allowed on the property.
We are extremely disappointed that this situation was ever allowed to happen. We were not informed as to the full nature of the youth camp at the time the reservation was requested, and our vetting procedures failed to identify this issue. We will review all internal procedures and policies immediately to ensure that no inappropriate groups will be able to utilize LHC facilities, equipment or programs.
The nature of this group’s activities is clearly contrary to the values of the BSA. The Boy Scouts of America’s National Executive Committee released a statement last week about our movement’s commitment to act against racial injustice. That statement can be read here “BSA’s Commitment to Act Against Racial Injustice” and amplification can be found at “Answering Common Questions About the BSA’s Commitment to Act Against Racial Injustice.”
Once again, we regret in the strongest possible terms that this situation happened.
John Coyle, Scout Executive
