Open Letter to the Great Volunteers of the Longhorn Council,
Please join us in offering our heartfelt congratulations to John Coyle on his retirement! We are excited for him as he moves on to the next chapter of his life. Forty years of service in one organization and the last nine years in the Longhorn Council deserve a great send off. Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic happening, we will continue our search for a time and place to celebrate with him. Meanwhile, all we can do is offer our appreciation and gratitude for his service and dedication to Scouting, the Longhorn Council, and the Scouts of North and Central Texas. John, we wish you and Kathleen great joy in your retirement!
As the two volunteer members of the Council Key 3, we want to let you know what will happen next and ask for your input. The Council Executive Board initiated the process for selecting the next Scout Executive at its meeting last Tuesday night. The Selection Committee is comprised of an excellent and diverse group of volunteers who represent all four of our geographic Service Areas and programs including Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Exploring. The Committee includes current unit leaders as well as seasoned district and Council leaders. We are very fortunate that Ms. Ellie Morrison, our immediate past National Commissioner and a past Longhorn Council Commissioner, has agreed to serve as Chair of the Committee.
One of the first tasks for the Selection Committee will be to develop a self-assessment of our Council and description of the ideal candidate. You can help the Committee by sharing your thoughts about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of and to the Council. Please send those ideas, along with your name, contact information, and current position(s) in Scouting to Ellie at [email protected] by July 6th.
We anticipate that our new Council Scout Executive will be in place in the next few months. Please know the professional staff, under the leadership of our Deputy Scout Executive, James Johnson, and Area Director, Phillip Shipley, will continue to work hard to support you. The two of us, your Council officers, and Executive Board will be do the same. All of us are available to you.
Thank you for your continuing service to the Scouting movement. Your work with the youth of America to instill the values of the Scout Oath and Law and forge the moral and ethical character of tomorrow’s leaders is as important today as it has been at any time in the last 110 years. Thank you.
If you have any questions about this matter or need assistance you have not been able to find, please do not hesitate to contact either of us.
Yours in Scouting Service,
