Climbing & Tower Instructor Training & Re-Certification Courses

Rock Climbing Instructor Course. Unlimited enrollment, pre-reg. required. $55.
These classes are designed to certify adults to lead rock climbing and rappelling activities for single and multi-unit activities. Includes a Tower Certification Class that covers the SR2 Tower and the 2 towers at the Longhorn Activity Center in Fort Worth.
The course is held Friday evening through Sunday on the dates listed on the reverse. Check in at the SR2 Tower at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch on Friday night. The fee includes all meals from breakfast on Saturday to lunch on Sunday. Please bring something for a cracker-barrel Friday night. Plan to arrive early and be prepared to start class no later than 8:00 p.m. on Friday, as the course will begin promptly. We will try and dismiss by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. You will not need to make a camp reservation. All registrations must be prepaid. After registering, participants will receive the course information and an outline of knots participants are expected to know on arrival for the class. The required course manual for climbing courses is the BSA’s Topping Out, A BSA Climbing/Rappelling Manual, available at Longhorn Council Scout Shops. There is a $50 non-refundable fee due at time of application.
SR2 Tower Instructor Course. Unlimited enrollment, pre-reg required. Saturdays only. $30.
These classes are designed to certify adults to lead climbing and rappelling activities for units at the SR2 Tower and the 2 towers at the Longhorn Activity Center in Fort Worth.
Tower training classes will be held at the Climbing Tower near the COPE Course at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. There is a $25 non-refundable fee due at time of application. Check in time is 8:00 a.m. at the tower. The classes will end at 6:00 p.m.. Please bring a sack lunch and lots of water/drinks/snacks. You will not need to make a camp reservation. Longhorn Activity Center Tower Instructor Course. For currently certified instructors.
Free 1 hour site-specific training can be scheduled at the Longhorn Activity Center on request. These trainings are ONLY for currently certified Climbing instructors who would like to run climbing programs at the Longhorn facility. (BSA Climbing standards a require a site-specific orientation for each new facility that a Climbing Instructor runs) Reserve at least three days prior to the training time (exception made if training for others is already scheduled). Training will be held regardless of weather. Longhorn Tower operational training is also included in the ‘regular’ training program. Contact Gary Wilson at [email protected] to schedule.
Recertification Courses: Tower & Rock Instructors Unlimited enrollment, pre-reg. required. $30.
The Climbing & Tower Re-Certification Courses begin at the Sid Richardson Scout Ranch TOWER at 8a.m. Saturday and end when the participant demonstrates proficiency. ALL Recert. Courses start at the Climbing Tower. (NOTE: Anyone who completes the Rock Training course will get a tower card). Recerts are from 8 a.m. till 12 noon. Be sure to bring a lunch, lots of water, and gloves. You will not need to make a camp reservation. Renewal Courses now cover the SR2 Tower and the two towers at the Longhorn Activity Center in Fort Worth.

C.O.P.E. Instructor / Facilitator Course
Challenge course programs emphasize learning by doing. COPE Facilitators guide participants of all sizes, shapes, and physical abilities through initiative problems and low and high ropes course challenges. The program is designed to develop leadership, goal setting, communication, decision-making, problem solving, teamwork, confidence, trust, and self-esteem. For adults 18 and older who enjoy helping others develop their skills and desire to have a whole lot of fun in the woods! For more info contact Louise Nielsen, [email protected]. Climbing Course Manual – REQUIRED
As of 2015 the required course manual for climbing courses is BSA’s new Belay On, the new climbing/rappelling and COPE manual. It is only available for download.
