Camp Tahuaya is a beautiful, heavily forested 150 acre camp with the largest natural spring in Texas. Walking distances are short! The lake is stocked with trout. The cold sparkling springs attracted the camps & burial grounds of prehistoric Plainview Man, and later several Native American tribes. Spanish Conquistadors built their forts here. Texas settlers built a grinding mill and millrace whose ruins are now historic landmarks in the camp. The Old Military Road and the Shanklin Mill brought thousands of wagons to the spring, carving deep wheel ruts still visible in the stone by our lake. The stone fences, plentiful arrowheads, Military Road, and millrace ruins are visible reminders of Camp Tahuaya’s frontier heritage.
We are preparing summer camp and high adventure 2021 to meet the strictest of covid-19 protocols as necessary. Our policies will be guided by the guidance of the CDC, the State of Texas, and BSA. Click here for our COVID-19 Postponement, Cancellation, and Refund Policies. We will continue to update as necessary our event, camp, and training calendars and our recommendations to units as we receive new guidance from our public health leaders.
During the last year, 2019-2020, several large improvements were made to Camp Tahuaya Ranges and three shower houses with flushing toilets were installed.
Pool, Showers, and Bathrooms
Camp Tahuaya has a new pool, pool showers, warehouse, and Ranger house. We rebuilt the campsite latrines with privacy stalls & shower doors in 2014.
Baden Powell 1st Year Program
Camp Tahuaya’s First Year program. Our goal is to give your First Year Campers a FUN week that will help you inspire them to stay in Scouting and return to camp next year! We challenge your first year campers to learn the skills they need to pass the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. Baden Powell is a half–day program offered both morning and afternoon. It is an excellent program for your newer Scouts.
Trout & Bass Our cold spring-fed lake is stocked with Trout. Fly Fishing and Fishing Merit Badges are taught. Large Smallmouth bass and blue gill hit flies hard too, as well as standard lures and baits. Fishing is allowed only for summer camp participants.
Railroading MB & G-Scale Trains
Model Railroad expert John Biel is helping our staff build Tahuaya’s model train facility in half of the old warehouse. The big model train setup makes Railroading Merit Badge a LOT more fun!
The Great Tahuaya Raft Race
Troops pick up raft equipment on Monday and have until Friday to design and build a floating raft. (It BETTER float!) The race is Friday. This will test your youth’s lashing skills and ingenuity!
