What a great summer we are having in Longhorn Council!

What a great summer we are having in Longhorn Council!

Last week I had the pleasure of participating in the “Assessment” of each of our four resident summer camps, along with our Council President, Jim Hamilton and our Director of Support Services, Jeff Peters.  Each of our camps was fully accredited by a team of nationally trained Scouting volunteers who are members of councils other than Longhorn.

The assessment of each camp includes making sure all permits and health and safety requirements are met, staff age minimums and training requirements are fulfilled, and most important that Scouts participating are having fun!!

Longhorn Council employs nearly 200 camp staff members in the summer, and thanks to their dedication and enthusiasm, Longhorn Council is proud to offer some of the best camping experiences to our youth and leaders as can be found anywhere in the BSA.

Each of our camps have their own unique flavor, and some Scout units return to the same camp year after year.  Other units rotate the summer camp that they attend so that they can experience a different flavor.

In case you are not familiar, our four camps are Camp Tahuaya located in Belton, Worth Ranch in Palo Pinto, and Sid Richardson Scout Ranch (SR2) and Chisholm Trail Adventure at the Texas High Adventure Base are both in Bridgeport.  Camp Tahuaya, Worth Ranch and SR2 offer Boy Scout summer camp programs, but each one has their own traditions and special programs.  The Chisholm Trail High Adventure is a very unique experience where crews travel each day to a different theme-based camp using a pontoon boat on Lake Bridgeport.  You can find a lot more information on this web site.

Camp Tahuaya and SR2 also operate resident camps for Cub Scouts, so our younger boys will have a chance to earn advancement while camping overnight in the outdoors, and having huge amounts of fun.

There are lots of volunteers and staff members who work tirelessly year round, behind the scenes, to make sure our programs and facilities are the best.  My thanks to all of you who are making a tremendous impact on the lives of our young people though the work you do in Longhorn Council.
