  Klondike Derby - Wheels allowed on Sleds
Test your winter camping and outdoor skills at the Longhorn Council Klondike Derby. Open to Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Teams and Venture Crews. Each patrol/crew must build and bring a sled. At Camp Tahuaya.

NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor and NRA Range Safety Officer Training 
NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor and NRA Range Safety Officer Training. Adults (21 or older) interested in becoming certified as an NRA Rifle and NRA Shotgun Instructor. Limit 20 participants. At Worth Ranch, in Palo Pinto, Texas.
Weekend 1: March 7-8, 2009

This is a 36-40 hour course. Attendance is mandatory for both weekends.

Tower Training and Recert 
Tower Training (& Recert. Classes). 10-hour class designed to certify ADULTS to lead Tower climbing and rappelling activities for single units (This certification does NOT cover multi-unit activities, like camporees). There is no class size limit, but pre-registration is required. 8:00 a.m. to 6 PM – must arrive on time. At Sid Richardson Scout Ranch

Spring Orienteering Competition
Three events in one: individual competition, team competition, and group map hikes. Everyone can enter: families, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew Members, Explorers, adults, ROTC units, and the public. Choose from 7 map courses from beginner to expert. Co-sponsored by the Longhorn Council Orienteering Committee and the North Texas Orienteering Association. At Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.

Battle of the Mexia: Venturing Living History Weekend
Venturing Living History Weekend: Battle of Mexia, Mexia, TX. Wear the uniform, learn the drill, eat the food, and live the life of a trooper in the 1860’s. Open to: Boy Scouts, Varsity Teams, and Venturing; must be 14 to participate. Venture Crew Members can work on their Outdoor Living History Elective for the Ranger Award. NOTE: 2009 dates may be changed by the parks that sponsor these events – check the web for updates!

Council Annual Banquet and Annual Business Meeting
The banquet will feature the great accomplishments of the volunteers in the Longhorn Council. Special presentations will include the Silver Beaver Awards given for outstanding service to youth in the Longhorn Council.
Silver Beaver Award Nomination forms are due in one of the council office by 5PM on March 1st.
 

April 17-19, 2009

Rock Climbing Training (& Rock/Tower Recert. Classes)
This course is designed to certify ADULTS to lead climbing and rappelling activities for their units on rock. Completion of this training qualifies the participant as a BSA Instructor, able to lead single or multi-unit activities at any location. Course is Friday evening through late Sunday afternoon at SR2. There is no class size limit, but pre-registration is required. At Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.

Spring Canoe Race
Two races: a 6-mile Fun Race from Worth Ranch to the Highway 4 bridge and a 14 mile Race for experienced canoeists from the Dam to camp. 100-yard War Canoe Race in the afternoon. 14-Mile racers will launch early. 6-Mile racers will have assigned start times to avoid congestion at the launch point. Lunch, boats, equipment, awards, and supper provided. Open to Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers, and adults. Parent/Youth teams welcome. Be sure to get the Early Registration Discount! At Worth Ranch.

NRA Range Safety Officer Certification Training
Two separate classes for adults (21 or older).
Must be an Adult. At Hurst Council Office on Saturday, April 25, 2009
This is an 8 hour one day course. Limit 25 participants per class.

USA Archery Basic Archery Instructor Course (formerly NAA Level 1)
This course is good for adults who would like to run an archery program for their Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Team, or Venturing Crew, and for Archery Merit Badge and summer camp counselors. Upon completion, students will receive the Basic Archery Instructor certification and NADA instructor card valid for 4 years, and Instructor Manual. At Worth Ranch.

Trout Fishing and Fly Tyeing Camp
Learn to fly fish and tie flies for various seasons and species. Open to Boy Scouts and Venturing, age 13 and older. Limit 20.

Road to Ranger - Venturing Camp
Venturers will earn the Outdoor Bronze Award and complete most of the core requirements for the Ranger Award. Featuring wind surfing, horsemanship, rifle and shotgun shooting, wilderness survival, first aid, archery, COPE. swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA, US Cavalry 1870's living history, Covert Ops, Area 51 (paintball vs. aliens), orienteering, GPS navigation, KODIAK teambuilding, and much more! Staffed by Longhorn Council Venturing volunteers and the Texas High Adventure Base staff.

Join our expert wakeboard staff for a week of intermediate to advanced wakeboarding instruction and fun. Plan to ride hard - many more hours than you would at any ski school.
