Orienteering Instructor Training
Orienteering Merit Badge Counselor and Course Setter Training
Sid Richardson Scout Ranch
Friday, March 18 – Sunday, March 20, 2016
Longhorn Council and the North Texas Orienteering Association (NTOA) are co-sponsoring training for adult scouters and volunteers interested in taking their “O” skills to the next level. This training provides an excellent practical foundation for Orienteering Merit Badge Counselors. The curriculum is based on training conducted annually at the Philmont Training Center.
Expert instructors with many years of orienteering experience provide training that is reinforced with actual orienteering meet experience. This is a unique training opportunity, led by the author of the Orienteering Merit Badge book, who designed and often teaches the Philmont Training Center’s Orienteering class.
The course will show you how to effectively use the permanent of courses at Hills and Hollows, Worth Ranch, and SRs for teaching O-skills on campouts, and help you improve your youth’s performance at all of our Orienteering competitions!
Orienteering, also known as the “Thinking Sport”, is an international sport that is challenging, fast-paced and fun. It builds core scouting skills as runners put their map and compass skills to the test. Participants in this hands-on course will learn the sport from the ground up and leave with the skills necessary to design, setup and run orienteering courses in their units or advancement programs. Mapping and map making are also introduced.
Training begins Friday evening and concludes Sunday afternoon. The training is a combination of classroom, hands-on, and participation in a 2-day orienteering meet.
This training is open to any adult leader or volunteer registered with the BSA. The cost is $50 per person and covers all course materials, camping, 2-day meet fee and insurance.
Onsite camping is included. A limited number of dormitory bunks are available for $20. Hotels are available in nearby Bridgeport. Meals are not included but can be purchased separately.
