Worth
Ranch, known as “The Big Adventure,” has been a Longhorn
Council tradition since 1929. Worth is one of America’s oldest
and finest traditional Scouting programs. We are located 60 miles
west of Fort Worth on the Brazos River at the foot of Kyle Mountain.
The historic stone and petrified wood buildings that encircle our
parade ground showcase the rich and colorful history of Worth Ranch.
Comanche Indians once lived on our parade ground, and Quannah Parker,
the last great war chief of the Comanche, was born only a few miles
up the Brazos River. The chuck wagon was developed near here in 1866.
When your troop attends Worth Ranch you’ll receive traditional
Scouting at its best from our talented staff and outstanding program
facilities. Your Scouts can climb and rappel on the cliffs of our
“Climbing Garden,” fish, tube, canoe and kayak with us on
the Brazos River, hike Kyle Mountain, swim and play water basketball
and volleyball in our 2 new pools, see the best campfire programs
in the country and eat in our brand new air-conditioned Duncan Dining
Hall. Scouts and adults may also take Mile Swim, Snorkeling BSA, and
BSA Lifeguard.
High
Adventure Programs
All Longhorn Council high adventure programs are available to older
youth and adults from units camping at Worth Ranch, Camp Tahuaya,
or Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. You can send patrols on our Brazos
River Canoe Trip 50–miler, based at Worth Ranch. Crews of older
youth and adults may do the unique and exciting Chisholm Trail Adventure
on Lake Bridgeport at Sid Richardson. Individual youth and adults
may spend a week learning to wakeboard at the Steele Island Aquatics
Base. All high adventure programs require a separate reservation and
deposit.
The
Hammer Patrol
The Hammer Patrol is designed for brand new Scouts (Scout Rank) and
focuses on basic Scouting outdoor skills and the requirements for
the Tenderfoot rank, such as first aid, fire building, use of wood
tools, map and compass reading, and knots and lashings. The Hammer
Patrol will also cover some requirements for Second and First Class.
We encourage our experienced troop leaders to assist the Scouts enrolled
in the Hammer Patrol.

Climbing and Rappelling
Learn climbing and rappelling on the cliffs of the Worth Ranch Climbing
Garden. We offer Climbing Merit Badge, as well as daily climbing programs.
Afternoon
Canoe Trips
Troops spending their week at base camp can take a 6–mile afternoon
canoe trip from Worth Ranch to Dark Valley Bridge. All canoeists must
be swimmer’s.
Kyle
Mountain Sunrise Club
Become a member of the most exclusive club around: the Kyle Mountain
Sunrise Club! This Troop program combines the adventure of hiking,
campfire, and Scouting lore at its very best! You’ll spend the
night under the stars on the top of Kyle Mountain.
Third
Year Canoe Trip
Scouts who have attended at least 3 summer camps at Worth Ranch may
join senior staff for an special Wednesday night canoe camping trip
to Seven Rocks - one of the most scenic spots on the Brazos River.
Dinner will be a cookout by the river!
Kayaking
Learn to paddle one of our river kayaks! Just another way to have
more fun on the river.
Scoutmaster vs. Staff Softball Game
Our own Homer Charlies (Staff) look for another winning season against
their arch rival Kyle Mountain Rangers (scoutmasters)! This fierce
competition started in the 1940’s and continues to this day.
Scoutmasters: bring your gloves and all the LUCK you can carry!
The
Family Night Campfire Program
The famous Worth Ranch campfire program is scheduled for Thursday
night for your troop, families, and guests. Guests can join us for
dinner at 6:00 PM., visit the Worth Ranch Museum, then attend our
OA Callouts and famous family night campfire. Leaders should let the
camp know on Tuesday the number of guests they expect for dinner on
Thursday.
