An Austin, Texas Venturer on one of the cliffs at Hermit's Cave in 2002.

Sailing a 26-foot sailboat on Lake Bridgeport in July 2002.

Cavalry staff NCOs take a hardtack break in 2001. Venturers can earn the Living History Elective by serving as U.S. Cavalry staff. Early arrival required.

The Longhorn Council offers a National Venturing Nature of Leadership Course through the unique and exciting Chisholm Trail Adventure program. Participants spend a week on a pontoon boat visiting our high adventure outposts and watersports bases. Treks consist of a crew of 8-12 Venturers. Entire Venture Crews can do NOL as a special leadership program. Individuals can sign up for a provisional crew. Provisional crews will have two adult Nature of Leadership instructors provided by the Longhorn Council.

The Nature of Leadership Course
The new Venturing Nature of Leadership Course puts participants in an outstanding council high adventure program and teaches useable, relevant leadership skills that every Venturer can use. It combines a challenging and fun adventure trek with a simple and fun hands-on leadership course.

Venturers will work on five core elements of leadership: Effective Teams, Values and Vision, Communication, Decision Making, and Planning. The goal is to help Venturers
become better leaders who can work with and through a team to accomplish a mission.

Chisholm Trail Adventure
Chisholm Trail is a unique and unforgettable high adventure - a backpacking program where you’ll use our boats instead of your boots. You get a pontoon boat for a week to carry your crew and your gear to the high adventure and watersports programs on our 19 miles of Lake Bridgeport shoreline.

You’ll spend every afternoon at a watersports base. Then you'll go to one of our outposts and do the
high adventure program from suppertime until lunchtime the next day.

High Adv. Outposts: Watersports:
U.S. Cavalry Company Wakeboard, Ski, Tubing
Texas Ranger Company The Blob and Water Park
Comanche Village Windsurfing
Covert Ops & Mtn Biking Sailing
Rock Climbing
Sporting Clays
Orienteering & Geocacheing

Our Living History battle reenactment outposts and Covert Ops program are unique. We have added Sporting Clays and and Orienteering competitions for 2003. See the Chisholm Trail Adventure section for program photos and details. Your crew will choose five of our seven outposts.

NOL Treks may be scheduled for the last week of June or the first week of July. Participants from area Venture Crews may arrive by car at or before the Sunday noon check-in time. Upon acceptance as a trek participant, you will receive a travel advisory and information specific to your trek. The Chisholm Trail staff will work directly with you to insure you are picked up at the airport and you are fully prepared for your trek.
