Each team gets a map showing the location of orange and white orienteering flags that are hidden in the woods.

Your mission is to figure out the best routes and the best strategy to find the flags as fast as possible.

Each flag has a hole punch so that you can verify that you found it by punching your scorecard.

A Scout finds Flag # 10 in summer 2004.

This is NOT a mreit badge class

It's COMPETITION! And you have to beat the ADULTS, too!

A Scout from Troop 43, Fort Worth, Texas, finds a falg in a dry streambed in 2004.

Hike and compete in the woods as you learn European Sport Orienteering. It’s a thinking sport - solving puzzles in the woods! This ain’t Orienteering Merit Badge folks! You’ll hone your map reading skills as you choose the best routes to find the orienteering flags that are hidden in the woods. The flags are marked by circles on a color map. Plan your strategy to score the most points! This is a competition outpost!

Orienteering is a fun and exciting challenge for any crew - especially Out-of-Council crews who have not had a chance to attend one of our big orienteering competitions. Once you arrive you’ll cook your own supper and then it is time for some orienteering fun! You’ll do a “Score-O” competition, for teams of 4-6 racers, and some head-to-head challenges for individuals and teams of 2.

NOTE: the Longhorn Council’s annual SCORE-O competition hosts over 2000 Scout and adult competitors every year and was featured in the September 2001 issue of Scouting Magazine. The new Orienteering Merit Badge book has a full color Longhorn Council Orienteering map inside.

Your crew needs compasses and several watches. Everyone needs canteens or water bottles. The section of camp we are using is scenic and rugged with heavy forest, open prairie, some thick vegetation, and lots of rocks! Be sure to bring long pants and good shoes or boots.
