ADDENDUM
ON RELIGIOUS AWARDS
Because the
Boy Scouts of America is nonsectarian, it, therefore, has no religious
emblems. Those it recognizes have been developed by each denomination
for its members, but they share some general characteristics:
- Each religious
award candidate must be registered with the BSA before working
in the appropriate religious program, in which he is usually instructed/guided
by his own clergyman--ministers, pastors, priest, rabbi, imam,
etc., or religious counselor.
- Religious
counselors should be registered with the BSA, and Scout leaders
should not be emblem counselors unless they have been certified
by the appropriate religious authority.
- Upon completion
of Requirements: for the award, presentation of it is made during
a religious service. It should be recognized, or presented again
to the recipient, at a Scouting ceremony (e.g., pack meeting or
court of honor).
- The award
is a medal, which is worn on formal occasions centered above the
left uniform pocket, and a universal square knot, which is permanently
worn just above the left pocket.
- A Scout may
begin work on a religious award when he joins a unit, but some
denominations require that a Scout attain a certain rank or tenure
before the emblem can be presented.
Be aware that
fees may be charged by denominations for program registration, study
materials, and awards.
