Test your winter camping and outdoor skills at the Longhorn Council Klondike Derby. Open to Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Teams and Venture Crews. Each patrol/crew must build and bring a sled. At Camp Tahuaya.

Tower Training and Recert 

Tower Training (& Recert. Classes). 10-hour class designed to certify ADULTS to lead Tower climbing and rappelling activities for single units (This certification does NOT cover multi-unit activities, like camporees). Battle of the Mexia: Venturing Living History Weekend

Venturing Living History Weekend: Battle of Mexia, Mexia, TX. Wear the uniform, learn the drill, eat the food, and live the life of a trooper in the 1860’s. Open to: Boy Scouts, Varsity Teams, and Venturing; must be 14 to participate. Venture Crew Members can work on their Outdoor Living History Elective for the Ranger Award. NOTE: 2010 dates may be changed by the parks that sponsor these events – check the web for updates!

April, 2010 Council Annual Banquet and Annual Business Meeting
The banquet will feature the great accomplishments of the volunteers in the Longhorn Council. Special presentations will include the Silver Beaver Awards given for outstanding service to youth in the Longhorn Council. Silver Beaver Award Nomination forms are due in one of the council office by 5PM on March 1st.

Rock Climbing Training (& Rock/Tower Recert. Classes)

This course is designed to certify ADULTS to lead climbing and rappelling activities for their units on rock. Completion of this training qualifies the participant as a BSA Instructor, able to lead single or multi-unit activities. Course is Friday evening through late Sunday afternoon at SR2. Adventure Race SR2 - NEW FORMAT

NEW FORMAT for 2010. Adventure Race for teams of two, three, or four racers, or for individuals. Competition includes: running, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, shooting, and climbing. Part of the race will use will use the new mountain bike trail. Open to Troops, Teams, Crews, and the public.

Aquatic and Lifeguard School

New program to comply with new BSA Lifeguard Requirements. Emphasis on a wider range of Aquatics skills. Youth and adults age 15 & older may earn BSA Lifeguard and Red Cross Lifeguard. Youth and adults 16 & older may complete the new “Swimming and Water Rescue” and “Paddle Craft Safety” courses. New BSA Lifeguard age req. is 15 years old.

Road to Ranger - Venturing Camp

Venturers will earn the Outdoor Bronze Award and complete most of the core requirements for the Ranger Award. Featuring wind surfing, horsemanship, rifle and shotgun shooting, wilderness survival, first aid, archery, COPE. swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA, US Cavalry 1870's living history, Viking living history, Covert Ops, Area 51 (paintball vs. aliens), orienteering, GPS navigation, KODIAK teambuilding, and much more! Staffed by Longhorn Council Venturing volunteers and the Texas High Adventure Base staff.

Wakeboard Advanced School

Join our expert wakeboard staff for a week of intermediate to advanced wakeboarding instruction and fun. Plan to ride hard - many more hours than you would at any ski school. Score-O is map reading and problem solving in the woods. Your team gets a SCORE-O map half an hour before the race starts. You plan your strategy to find the most flags and maximize your score in 4 hours. Map training is held all morning. Venturing Living History Weekend: Battle of Ogletree Gap , Copperas Cove Texas

The Ogletree Gap Heritage Festival is held just west of Copperas Cove each October and a small group of reenactors meet and conduct two battles on Saturday and one on Sunday. Saturday night there will be a period dance. Open to: Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturers; must be 14 to participate. Venturers can work on their Living History requirements.

Highland Games - at Camp Tahuaya

The Games will be held on the same weekend as the Gathering of the Clans festival in Salado. Crews and Troops may camp at Tahuaya, participate in the morning Highland Games at Camp, and visit the nearby Highland Festival in the afternoon and evening. This event is open to Boy Scouts, Varsity Team members, Venturers, & adults. The Gathering of the Clans festival in Salado is a public event with a separate fee.

US Cavalry Living History Winter Camp - web page

Learn the the history of 1870's frontier Texas as you serve for a week as a Cavalry soldier. The 1872 U.S. Cavalry Company program is for Boy Scouts age 13 and older, and Venturing Crew members age 14 and older. Cavalry Outpost includes authentic carbines, cannons, uniforms, food, and equipment, several battles against local outlaws and Indians. Also includes an overnight stay in the Historic barracks at Fort Richardson. Open to: Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturers. Venturers can earn the Living History requirement. At SR2
