Youth Protection Training

Online Training

BSA offers Youth Protection Training on the web through the BSA Online Learning Center. The course will take approximately 1 - 2 hours to complete, depending on the speed of your web connection. Anyone is welcome to take the course. If you are a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America be sure to have your BSA Person ID number ready at your fingertips before you start the course. A BSA registered adult leader who completes the course and the test will get an email confirmation that includes a printable YPT card.
NOTE: Youth Protection Training cards are good for two years in the Longhorn Council. The State of Texas is specifically NOT requiring those Scouters who took BSA’s online Youth Protection Training before May 15, 2006 to go back and retake the online YPT course. PROBLEMS:

  • If you have problems with the Youth Protection Training website or need help getting your BSA Person ID number, please email Patricia at pphillips@longhorn.org
  • For problems with the Youth Protection Training website or BSA Online Learning Center:
The YPT and Online Learning Center site is a part of BSA's National website.  Please remember that every weekend in late May and in June there are hundreds of thousands of adult volunteers all across the U.S. trying to log-in in to the site to take required training courses like Youth Protection Training so that they can go to Day Camp or Summer Camp.  Many people wait until the last minute.  Unfortunately the last minute happens at the same time on the same weekends all over the USA. If you have problems logging in at this time of year your best bet is to keep trying. Some LHC Scouters have reported that it took up to 18 attempts to login and complete YPT. Example: every parent attendig day camp and summer camp in Texas must take the youth protection training.  That is thousands of people just in the Longhorn Council).
BSA's National Help Desk is at 1-800-627-3025. Choose Option 1, then choose Option 2. They will be able to help you solve software issues.

UPDATE:
Starting January 1, 2009 BSA is requiring all adult leaders to renew their Youth Protection Training certification every two years. Adult Scouters must get a new certification from the BSA online YPT course every two years. In addition, the state of Texas requires all BSA adults and parents attending a summer camp, resident camp, or day camp to hold a current YPT certification that is renewed every two years.

Users are advised to wait 2 hours after activating their accounts to take the YPT course. If you are still having trouble, please exit and re-enter the Online Learning Center site.

HOW TO get a YPT Card - read this before you take the course.

  1. Go to the BSA Online Learning Center and click on Youth Protection Training. This will require you to register at MyScouting. Click on click here to create an account. Afterwards, you will need to respond to the confirmation email that was sent to the email address you assigned to your MyScouting account.
  2. In the box for “Council Number” select: “Longhorn Council – Hurst, TX – 662”
  3. In the box for “Member ID” enter your BSA Member ID number from your BSA Registration card. If you don’t have a BSA Member ID number just leave it blank! It is not required. (You can also enter it at a later date.)
  4. Once logged in, click on E-Learning and click the "Take Course" link for Youth Protection Training under the General tab. Take the Online YPT Course and test.
  5. PRINT the screen that shows your card after you take the test (in case you don't get the email).  For Windows users, if you have trouble printing the screen, enter [ ctrl ] + [ print screen ], (it might read: prt sc), then open a Word document, paste the screen into the document, adn print the Word document.
  6. BSA will send you an email with a printable PDF copy of your YPT card.
  7. Write down the date you take the course. (It can help you get a card later in case there is printer or computer error after you finish)
  8. If you have problems printing the card please email Patricia at pphillips@longhorn.org. Include the date when you took the test and your name. (Include your BSA Person ID number if you have one.)
  9. If you experience other problems before you finish the course and test - such as computer lock-ups, network freezes, etc. - try the system again. BSA regularly updates the software and glitches are fixed as fast as they are found. At times of peak use your may have to try multiple times! Remember - there are millions of BSA volunteers around the USA!

Troubleshooting:

If you take a course without inputting your BSA Member ID number and try to add it to your account later in the My Profile section and receive an error that says:

"The Council # 662 and Member ID you supplied could not be verified. Please try again."

Try these two steps:
  • Check the name on your card. Your profile name that you enter must be the exact same name that is on your BSA Registration card.
  • Make sure that you are registered with the Longhorn Council.
Take the VENTURING ADVISOR YPT Course.

Adult Youth Protection Training Policy

1.) All adult participants in all Scouting programs are encouraged to become "Youth Protection Trained".

2.) YPT "Trained" adults are only "certified" in the Longhorn Council, for a period of three years, after taking Youth Protection Training and will receive a "Trained" card after attending the training. Units participating in activities outside the Longhorn Council must comply with the Youth Protection requirements of BSA National or the Council where the activity takes place.

3.) YPT Cards are good for 2 years for Weekend Camping reservations, local tour permits, Unit Fundraising Projects, District and Council weekend program events (camporees, OA events, Webelos Woods, Fall Festival, Score-O, etc.), and unit program.

4.) All units must have at least one current YPT "Trained" (i.e. within the three year period) adult on-site participant for any activity requiring Council approval (e.g. Local Tour Permit, short-term weekend Camp Reservations, Unit Fundraising Projects). Camp Rangers will insist on seeing the card before a unit may set up camp.

NOTE 1: For National Tour Permits: "All registered adults must have completed BSA Youth Protection training for participation in any national event/activity" (e.g. Philmont, National Jamboree).

NOTE 2: Scouters and other adults who took the BSA Online Youth Protection Training Course before May 15th are NOT required to retake the course. Click here for an Outline of Youth Protection Training Requirements

NOTE 3: Adults attending (or staffing) summer and long-term camps and day camps in the state of Texas must provide the camp director with a photocopy of their YPT card from the BSA Online YPT Course. The online YPT course must be taken within two years of attending camp. (Note that this state requirement is different from the 2 year requirement for weekend camping reservations, etc., and only applies to the long-term camps and day camps that are listed below.) The BSA Online YPT Course is the state-approved course for BSA long-term and day camps in the state of Texas. This requirement applies ONLY to adults attending or staffing the following:
  • Summer Camp: Camp Tahuaya, Worth Ranch, SR2
  • Texas High Adventure Base: Chisholm Trail, Wakeboarding, BRCT
  • Cub Scout Day Camp
  • Cub Scout Resident Camp
  • Twin Arrows courses (adult staff)
  • Winter Camp

5.) All units are encouraged to have at least one YPT "Trained" adult participant for EVERY unit activity even if the activity does not require Council approval.

Youth Protection Training News

The course is hosted on on BSA's national website in the new Online Learning Center. Anyone is welcome to take the course, although only registered Longhorn Council Scouters can receive a YPT Training Card.

One of the benefits of having Youth Protection Training on-line is that it is immediately available for new Scout Leaders at any time of the day. The on-line version is also available for all parents in the unit. Getting parents to complete the training will help them understand what YPT policies are so they can follow the policies when working with Scouts.

Youth Protection Training in the Districts is being discontinued and is being replaced with the on-line training and instructed courses which will be offered by Council training teams. Initial plans are to offer an instructed course once per year in Fort Worth and once per year in Waco. Additional courses will be offered if there is a demand for a traditional instructed course. On-line YPT was made available at University of Scouting last fall and plans are being made to make YPT training in that format available at University of Scouting again this year.

The on-line course takes one to two hours to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection. Scouters wanting to be certified for completing the training should have their BSA member number available. They MUST provide the number at the end of the training session in order to get a Youth Protection Training card.

The member number is used to enter the name of the successful participant in the Council database records. A pocket YPT card (PDF file) is e-mailed to participant as soon as they complete the course. The on-line training site must be entered through the Longhorn Council Web Site in order to received credit in the Longhorn Council. Entering the YPT site from the Council Web Site provides assess to YPT policies and reporting procedures that are written specifically for the Longhorn Council.
